Haskell county texas4/28/2023 ![]() Hundreds of people moved out of the county. 1940 the county had lost 441 farms (19% total ten years earlier). Mid 1930s Great Depression and Dust Bowl hurt farming sector severely, 100,000 acres of cotton land fell out of production. Poultry production was important to the local economy that year, reporting 125,000 chickens 569,000 dozen eggs. 1930 272,000 acres of land in the county was planted in cotton, corn and wheat. Cotton production expanded in the county yet economy declined. Cattle ranching was important with 34,000 cattle. Farmers planted more than 28,000 fruit (mostly peach) trees by 1910, 10,300 chickens were reported on local farms. 1910s-20s Agricultural economy diversified. 1905, 1908 railroads built into the county.1905, citizens of Haskell, Munday, and Wichita Falls pooled $120,000 to encourage Colorado and Southern Railroad to extend the old Wichita Valley Railway, the track was completed in 1908 with the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient extended its tracks into the county. 1900 county had 256 farms/ranches, corn grown on 159 acres, cotton cultivation on 3,674 acres. was killed in a gun "fight" by Sheriff George Scarborough at the Road to Ruin Saloon, Haskell Co., TX.ġ890s Ranching was prominent with 105 ranches/ farms had been established in the county, 5,564 cattle and 6,171 sheep, corn planted on 1,421 acres and cotton on 1,340. Wright Mooar and hunters operating out of Fort Griffin killed the buffalo herds that roamed through the area, and rounded up the wild mustangs that frequented the springs. Adna Chaffee on S Point, California Creek had an Indian fight at Double Mountain. 1858 the Texas legislature formed Haskell County from lands formerly assigned to Milam and Fannin counties, but no settlement due to Indian Hostility. Searcy led a party to survey the land for settlement. It camped along California Creek in SE area where a young woman died, and was buried there.ġ855 - William Armstrong and I. A large company of gold-seekers left from Dallas and used Marcy's route through Haskell co. Marcy led an expedition along Paint Creek. Post 1700- Plains Apaches Comanches, Kiowas, and Kickapoos had camping places at various springs in the area with rendezvous points at Flat Top Mountain, in the W part of the future county. Pre-Columbian -Numerous burial sites have been found with artifacts of nomadic Indian groups in Haskell County. It was recreated 1876 and organized in 1885 It was named for Goliad victim C.R. 1858 Haskell County was created 1858 from Milam and Fannin counties.
